During the month of September, Barbara Zuehlke is the artist of the month at The Artists’ Gallery in Chestertown. There will be an Artist’s Reception on First Friday, September 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the gallery, located at 239 High Street in Chestertown. The exhibit is entitled “Optimos: The Best of Past and Present.”
Barbara is an award-winning Eastern Shore artist, working in various mediums from serigraph to oil, focusing primarily on watercolor. She is proficient in using wet pigment on wet paper (wet on wet) to a softness and flow that is exciting when combined with the sharp, clean edge of working on dry paper.
Of the exhibit, Barbara said, “After a year of major changes in my life, I decided that this year’s presentation of my work should be an example of my best, both present and past. There are pieces I still possess, that I feel are some of my finest, along with exciting new work. The feature shows at the gallery often have a subject matter theme. ‘Optimos’ includes a variety of my favorite subjects: flowers, water reflections, figures and Hershey Kisses.”
Barbara is a native of Grosse Pointe, Michigan and attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio where she earned a Fine Arts degree in graphics and painting. Her commercial experience began with the J.L Hudson Company in Detroit, designing large scale animated and still displays. She also worked for John Wannamakers in Philadelphia and did freelance work in wrapping paper and logo design. Today, Barbara works from her studio and quality frame shop in her home near Easton.
Barbara is a member of the Working Artists’ Forum and has had a one-person show at the Dorchester Art Center and her art has been seen at many art shows throughout the Eastern Shore.
