Plein Air Easton (PAE), the largest and most prestigious outdoor painting festival and art competition in the nation, is celebrating its 15th year in Easton this July 14 through 21. Each year the Avalon Foundation staff works together with the PAE Steering Committee to ensure that the content of the festival is compelling to all types of festival goers – whether they are collectors, artists, art enthusiasts, or experiencing the festival for the first time. This year is especially important as Plein Air Easton honors the legacy of the festival’s 15–year history.
For the first time, Plein Air Easton will host a few of the many alumni who have participated in PAE over the years in a program entitled “Coffee and Conversation.” This is an opportunity to venture out into the field where select alumni artists will be painting in a specific geographic area. The next morning, join them in the air-conditioned Avalon Theatre where they will discuss their process, methodology, tips, and anecdotes of painting en plein air. Coffee and Conversation takes place July 15 through 18 at 10 a.m. with a new panel of alumni artists each day.
Collaborating with Troika Gallery and Studio B Gallery, PAE will feature several marquis events. On Thursday, July 18, Troika Gallery presents an opportunity to go behind the scenes of one of the world’s largest and finest art museums with President and CEO of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Dan Weiss, on the Avalon stage.
The following morning, July 19, Studio B Gallery presents a live demo in the Avalon theatre. Master Jove Wang’s paintings are a visual combination of experience and art that reflect the soul of what he paints – whether it is a figure, landscape, or still life. This a rare opportunity to see master Jove Wang demonstrate his skills in person.
Saturday, July 20, Troika Gallery will present contemporary artist Raoul Middleman at the Avalon. Raoul will be discussing his prolific art career spanning 50 years, his artworks which number over 15,000, and the upcoming biographical film due for release in 2020.
Plein Air Easton is the work of the Avalon Foundation, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster a strong community on the Eastern Shore by creating accessible, uplifting arts, education, and cultural experiences that appeal to the interests of a diverse population and to ensure the long-term viability of the historic Avalon Theatre. The event is supported by the Talbot County Arts Council, corporate donors, Friends of Plein Air Easton, and strong community support.
