Call for Artists for Paint the Town

We’re gonna Paint the Town! Chestertown RiverArts, on the scenic Eastern Shore of Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay, invites artists to Paint the Town!  Past plein air artists have raved about our broad range of options for memorable paintings: Historic Chestertown’s 18th and 19th century homes and streets, it’s bustling Saturday farmer’s market, the old waterman’s village of Rock Hall, the rural landscapes and views of the Chester River and the Bay. So plan to join us April 25-28.

Enjoy four days of painting, Thursday to Saturday and then a Quick Draw on Sunday. Saturday evening will be the opening of the Wet Paint Show and Sale. Prior to the opening reception artists will choose Best of Show and Best Body of Work. On the fourth day, Sunday. The Quick Draw allows for two hours of painting in town followed by a display of works next to Chestertown’s beautiful Fountain Park where the paintings will once again be for sale.  During that time Marcy Dunn Ramsey, one of Kent County’s most popular and accomplished plein air artists, will be the judge. She will award first, second, and third place awards. Visitors will also vote for the People’s Choice Award.

Chestertown RiverArts realizes there are many other plein air events to choose from. We wanted to know how we stack up. With this in mind questionnaires were given to participating artists in 2023. These artists cited some 30 other plein air events in which they have participated.

The consensus was that Paint the Town is special. They wrote that what sets Paint the Town apart from other plein air events was the great variety of scenes to paint, the small town friendliness and hospitality of hosts who provided places to stay, the sense of camaraderie among the artists themselves, and how well organized everything was.

Go to for the schedule and registration form. Information will also be available about opportunities to stay with host families for those coming from a distance.

In addition to the needed information there is a slideshow that includes works capturing the range of places to paint in different media and styles. You will also see testimonials from past participants commenting on what makes Paint the Town a truly popular event among plein air painters. So join the fun and the opportunity to really Paint
