Academy Art Museum Celebrates the 200th Birthday of Frederick Douglass

February 17 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

The Academy Art Museum will celebrate the 200th Birthday of Frederick Douglass with two events in February.  On Monday, February 12, 2018, from 6 to 8 p.m., the Museum will present a living history presentation by Bill Grimmette, a living history interpreter, storyteller, actor, motivational speaker, and Maryland Humanities Council’s 2017 Chautauqua Scholar-Actor. Grimmette will take the audience on a journey through the life of Talbot County’s native son. Grimmette has performed Frederick Douglass for the Chautauqua presentations in Maryland and Colorado and other venues for the past 20 years. This year, for the Bicentennial celebration of Frederick Douglass’ birth, Grimmette is preparing a national tour to revitalize the argument for the constitution and the Museum will be his first stop. The cost of the living history presentation is $12 for Museum members and $15 for non-Museum members.

On Saturday, February 17, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Museum will host a Family Art Day which is free and open to the public. Come celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Eastern Shore’s civil rights icon by creating a fine art print that features one of his famous quotes, such as “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men” or “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” Registration is suggested.

Save the date for Juneteenth, co-sponsored by the Academy Art Museum and Frederick Douglass Honor Society and partnering with the Talbot County Public Library’s Chesapeake Children’s Book Festival. The Celebration will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For further information on these events, visit academyartmuseum.org or call 410-822-2787.
