Artist Continues to ‘Find His Voice’
October 5 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
During the month of October, The Artists’ Gallery presents Fred Sprock, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina. Meet the Artist at a reception at The Artists’ Gallery on First Friday, October 5 from 5 to 8 p.m.
In 2012, Fred moved to “the eastern shore of the Eastern Shore,” otherwise known as Snow Hill. From his studio, he paints mostly landscapes but recently has been producing still life pieces “in the hopes they may inform my landscapes.”
After retiring from a career in advertising, Fred began painting in earnest, enrolling at Braitman Studio in Charlotte. Over the years, he studied under Dee Beard Dean, Morgan Samuel Price, Richard Fennell, Roger Dale Brown, Wayne McDowell and Stuart Shils.
For Fred, landscape painting is complex and it is one of his goals to simplify the jigsaw puzzle. Fred elaborates, “On the other hand, a white bowl sitting on a white table appears simple. But when you study it – really look at it – that subject contains as much activity as a landscape. The challenge, for me, is to reveal to the viewer the complexity beneath the surface of this seemingly simple visual.”
Lately, Fred has been re-focused on trying to find his “voice.” He admits that “his voice” always seems to elude him. He explains, “By voice, I mean when you walk into a room you would know/recognize a painting as one done by Fred Sprock. At times I think I’ve found my voice only to see it go away. However, in this show I think there are at least echoes of my artistic voice.”
The Artists’ Gallery is located at 239 High Street in Chestertown. For more information, call 410-778-2425.
