Festival of Trees 2020 Reimagined

November 28 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

As 2020 trudged on, it became clear to Leslie Ware and Midge Menzies, founders of Friends of Hospice and the Festival of Trees, along with the Friends of Hospice Board and Talbot Hospice, that this year’s Festival of Trees would be vastly different in scope. While the effects of COVID-19 continue to resonate globally, it can’t diminish the importance of what the festival has achieved, nor what it will achieve in its 35th anniversary.

Each year, the Festival of Trees committee earmarks a special theme, and this year reflects the best of the American spirit, “The Red, The White and The Blue – A Celebration of an American Christmas.” Since 1985, Friends of Hospice has carried out its mission to raise funds for Talbot Hospice by sponsoring the annual Festival of Trees. Even during a pandemic, Friends of Hospice is still committed to raising money to help provide quality care and support for the terminally ill and their families in our community, even if it means reconfiguring this favorite pastime.

The Festival of Trees will not take place in the Gold Room of the Tidewater Inn this year. However, Friends of Hospice invites the public to enjoy decorated Christmas trees ranging from 12 to 36 inches in height to be on display on Saturday, November 28 at the tented pavilion behind the Tidewater Inn from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There, families of loved ones under Talbot Hospice care in 2020 are invited to place their family member’s name on a dove, which is then placed on the Hospice Memorial Tree. This year’s Hospice Tree is sponsored by Anne-Lise Fink. Entrance is free and open to the public. The displayed trees, decorated in the red, white and blue theme, are also for sale.

Poinsettias will again be sold through a mailing, the Talbot Hospice newsletter, talbothospice.org and festival-of-trees.org. While they will not be on display in a beautiful arrangement for all to enjoy this year, poinsettias may still be purchased in remembrance of family or friends. The poinsettias may be picked up at Garden Treasures in Easton on December 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Each plant costs $25. For more information, contact Mary Lou Barrows at dbarrows627@yahoo.com or Judy Haddaway at jhaddaway4@goeaston.net.

A Virtual Friends of Hospice Santa 5K Run, spearheaded by Alisha and Karli Saulsbury, will be held on December 11 and 12. Runners, walkers and families can participate virtually from anywhere. Participants are encouraged to dress in their best Santa hat or costume and will be able to post the results and share on the Hospice and Festival of Trees webpages. T-shirts will be provided for all registered participants. Alisha and her daughter will have pickup locations available the week of the event. Registration is $35 for the event and T-shirt. Contact Alisha at tamars98@gmail.com or call 443-786-0847.
