Grand National Waterfowl Association
November 17 @ 5:00 pm - 10:00 pm
The Grand National Waterfowl Association (GNWA) will celebrate its 35th Anniversary this year. The annual three-day hunt, sponsored by the GNWA, is scheduled for November 16 through 18. It is a prestigious hunting and shooting event unequaled in sportsmanship and down home country hospitality.
The event is held annually on 30,000 acres of privately held land in the heart of Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay tidelands, an area generally considered the home of the largest concentration of migratory waterfowl and resident game on the Atlantic Flyway.
The primary purpose of the hunt is to draw attention to the importance of the waterfowl preservation and raise funds to support education and conservation projects. The organization also established an Educational Trust to distribute renewable scholarships to local students pursuing degrees in the sciences. As of 2017, over $250,000 has been awarded.
Every year, the GNWA hosts two wounded veterans to participate in the hunt, as well as a member of the Maryland 4-H program. Once a hunter attends the event for the first time, he or she is invited to become a lifetime member of the GNWA Past Shooter Organization and is invited to hunt every year. The available spots are first-come, first-serve. New hunters are invitational spots. In addition to its Past Shooter Organization, the GNWA is supported by benefactors. It’s possible to join the GNWA at a single, double or corporate level and the benefactorship includes all-inclusive participation in the hunt week festivities.
Benefactors, hunters and invited dignitaries will gather on Thursday evening to start the three-day event. After morning hunts, there is a ladies-only luncheon event on Friday and a casual event called the Turlock induction ceremony on Saturday afternoon. To finish out the weekend, there is an awards banquet on Saturday evening. Each event is filled with fellowship, delicious food and great times promising to create cherished lifelong memories.
Most local folks know the GNWA for its annual GrandTastic Jamboree. Always well worth the admission price of $35 in advance or $40 at the door, it is a great evening full of food (including a buffet of fresh-shucked local oysters on the half shell, BBQ pit beef, oyster fritters, fried soft-shell crab sandwiches, Maryland crab soup, coleslaw, potato salad, baked beans and draft beer – all until it is all gone). The event is held at Sailwinds Park in Cambridge from 5 to 10 pm. on November 17. As always, Bird Dog & the Road Kings will be kicking off the evening starting at 5 p.m. followed by Animal House.
