“LIGHT water + stone”

March 30 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm

Over the last 30 years, Carla Massoni of Massoniart has often been asked: “How do you choose your artists?” The answer is simple. Carla Massoni says, “I need to love the work and respect the artist.” This year is shaping up to be an exciting one for Massoniart, with two internationally acclaimed artists who have served as lodestars throughout the gallery’s journey.

Greg Mort’s thought-provoking work graces museums and important collections worldwide. Carla said, “Curating his exhibits and deepening our friendship has been one of the highlights of my career. Greg’s commitment as an artist and astronomer has broadened our horizons as we contemplate our place in the Universe. The images he creates inspire us to embrace our responsibility as stewards of the Earth. His insights have motivated my support for numerous art initiatives aimed at raising awareness of the challenges facing our planet.”

Shelley Robzen’s sculptures were among the first three-dimensional works Carla exhibited. “Shelley has dedicated her career as an artist to exploring the secrets marble offers as a medium,” explains Carla. “Her studio is in Pietrasanta, Italy, not far from the famous quarries in Carrara. It takes rock hard determination to find one’s way as a woman in the male dominated world of sculpture. Shelley has earned my respect for the path she has forged and the success she has achieved as a woman and an artist. It is as a carver of stone that she has found her voice. Her reverence for the simplicity of the line she so resolutely seeks to reveal with hammer, chisel and rasp continues to inspire me.”

Greg and Shelley have exhibited with the gallery many times over the last 30 years. On several occasions they have shown together, the first time over 25 years ago.

It is with great pleasure that Carla announces that they are exhibiting together again and will headline Massoni Gallery’s 2019 season. “LIGHT water + stone” opens on March 30 and will continue through May 5. Greg will be working exclusively in watercolor and Shelley in Carrara marble. While Greg’s medium could fit in a thimble, Shelley’s shares the weight of the mountains from which it is mined. Their challenge is to capture the invisible element of light.

There will be an opening reception and open house on March 30 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The gallery is located at 203 High Street in Chestertown. An Artists’ Talk is scheduled for Saturday, April 6 at noon. For more information, call 410-778-7330.
