“Outside In” Exhibit Opens

July 9, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Outside In, the July exhibition at Dorchester Center for the Arts (DCA), focuses on work by untrained, or outsider, artists. It includes pieces by renowned artists Mose and Annie Tolliver and Howard Finster, who have had their paintings exhibited at venues such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the American Visionary Art Museum.

Howard Finster even appeared on “The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson” and created album covers for R.E.M. and Talking Heads. Other artists in the show work with unusual materials such as seeds (Jim Buhler), glass, (The Glassman), a produce crate (Zane Campbell), and even a bushel basket lid (Glenn Shiring). Visitors can also expect to see drawings and paintings by artists with strong local ties, including John Root Hopkins, Terry White, Danny Doughty, John Englehart, and Larry Scott.

Ed Krell, of Hooper’s Island, will exhibit his large-scale chalk pieces for the first time, and will also be on hand to discuss his art at the DCA’s Second Saturday reception on July 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. The reception will feature live music – a mix of country, folk rock, rock, and a bit of alternative indie music by Marianne and the Misfits. The duo, of Marianne Styles and Jon Jacobs, hail from Hoopers Island. The reception is free, and all are welcome to attend.
