Second Holland Island Heritage Meeting Scheduled
March 16 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
On Friday, March 16th at 1 pm, the Dorchester County Historical Society will host a second meeting for people who have stories, photos, documents, family histories and/or artifacts from Holland Island. This group will help to create programming and an exhibit that will celebrate the history and people of this now vacant Dorchester island.
The first meeting was very fruitful with more than 25 in attendance, including two past owners of this heritage rich place. Many stories and photos were shared that have begun to bring a tight knit community of families into focus. While the turnout for the first meeting was extraordinary, DCHS knows that there are many other descendants out there that should have input in this project.
While recent interest and writings about the island have occurred, much has been left to the imagination in terms of the lives that were made, the strength of the community and other personal histories. Family names include Parks, Todd, Powley, Bennett, Griffin, Price, Bradshaw, Duncan, Kelly, Walter, Jenkins, Wilson, Dize, Evans, Fisher and McCoy among others.
Anyone who would like to share their personal stories, show their artifacts, photos or papers in relation to Holland Island, please attend this meeting or contact DCHS at 410.228.7953. Programming for the general public is expected to take place later in the late spring or early summer. DCHS’ home is the Heritage Museums and Gardens of Dorchester, located at 1003 Greenway Drive in Cambridge.
