The Oxford Community Center (OCC) has served as a community resource since 1928, providing a year-round schedule of social, cultural and recreational programs and events for all ages. First it served as a school and has been a cultural activities center and meeting place for a quarter of a century. The month of August is proving to be a busy time at the OCC, as follows:
Tuesdays and Thursdays • 8 a.m.
Come experience a class with Nathan Spivey, a certified Bow Sim Mark Tai Chi Arts Association affiliate instructor with 40 years of experience. Drop-ins welcome.
Steady and Strong
Tuesdays and Thursdays • 10:30 a.m.
Steady and Strong is a 45-minute class for adults who seek enhanced core and muscle strength as well as better balance. Class leader is Janet Pfeffer. Drop-ins welcome.
Intermediate Tai Chi
Wednesdays • 8 a.m.
Enjoy Intermediate Tai Chi classes with Nathan Spivey. Drop-ins welcome.
Open Jam Session
Wednesdays • 8 p.m.
Bring instruments and join in this free weekly jam session.
Fridays • 2-5 p.m.
Start the weekend by visiting with neighbors and enjoying live music. Beverages and Firehouse Auxiliary baked goods offered for sale.
Cars and Coffee
August 4 • 9:30-11:30 a.m.
Stop to see the beautiful cars and speak to the owners. Free.
Kids Art Class
Aug 13-17 • 9 a.m.-Noon
Children in grades 2 through 6 will enjoy and learn in this class taught by artist Linda Luke. Cost includes all supplies.
Thursday Night Speaker Series
August 16 • 5:30 p.m.
Learn about the International Star World Championship Race in October that the Tred Avon Yacht Club is hosting in Oxford.
“Little Shop of Horrors”

The Tred Avon Players (TAP) has been presenting plays and musicals in the OCC for decades. In August, TAP presents “Little Shoppe of Horrors” by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken and directed By Marcia Gilliam. Seymour Krelborn is a meek, dejected assistant in a seedy flower shop on Skid Row who stumbles across a new breed of plant that he names “Audrey Two” after his co-worker crush. This R&B singing, carnivorous plant promises fame and fortune to the down-and-out Seymour, as long as he keeps feeding it…blood! As Audrey Two grows bigger and meaner, Seymour discovers the plant’s extraterrestrial origins and its intent of global domination…but has he discovered this too late? Fabulous Hubcaps Concert
September 1 • 6 p.m.
Performing together and wowing audiences since 1974, the Hubcaps have played everywhere from Miami to Detroit, including The White House and Oriole Park at Camden Yards. What began 42 years ago, The Fabulous Hubcaps is one of the nation’s most sought-after nostalgia show bands. With sounds of Do-Wop, Country, Motown, Group Harmony, Rockabilly, Classic Rock and Roll, The Hubcaps will take you back in time on a journey no one will forget.
