Talbot Mentors Photography Exhibit
June 1, 2018 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Nine Talbot Mentors youth have been working on a photography project, a six-week affair with mentors and mentees getting together once a week. Each mentee was given two disposable cameras and a “scavenger hunt” list of things to shoot, from family members to representation of the broader communities they live in. Beyond the list, the children could photograph whatever they like. The purpose of the project was to develop a stronger relationship between mentor and mentee while providing a meaningful focus on self-discovery through artistic expression.
Talbot Mentors is a non-profit organization that matches adults with children for a one-to-one mentoring experience. Talbot Mentors creates bonds that unleash potential. Every young person has boundless potential. Talbot Mentors’ volunteers connect with youth to help them unearth the capacity within and to explore and learn from each other’s worlds.
Executive Director Gerson Martinez states, “We are constantly learning, refining, and growing through research, evaluation, and reflection. As an evidence-based mentoring organization, we exist to support the self-awareness, self-confidence, and growth of our children, and to connect them to our larger community.”
This statement reflects precisely what this photography project is accomplishing. The photographs taken by the children will be showcased at The Trippe Gallery in Easton during the First Friday Gallery Walk on Friday, June 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. The gallery is located at 23 North Harrison Street in downtown Easton.
