“A Sailor’s View” Exhibit

September 6, 2018 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

An exhibit of marine paintings of Anne Allbeury-Hock’s favorite oil paintings of vessels, marinas, marshland and the ocean opens on September 4 at the Talbot County Free Library in St. Michaels. There will be a reception on Thursday, September 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. All are welcome.

Anne has been painting for over 25 years, mostly in oil on canvas. Plein air painting has been part of her life since growing up in Southern California where she and artist friends always “went on location.” Anne paints her marine subjects here in Talbot County and also in California, New York, and even of rivers in Wyoming.

Anne studied art at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, at the Art Student’s League in New York and privately with Guita Head, Gregory d’Allessio and Albert Camurati. Anne loves to travel to paint, taking workshops around the U.S. With painting friends, she travels for a week or so for plein air paintings and art camaraderie. Her inspirations come from the early California plein air painters from the 30s, including Emile Gruppe and Scott Christensen, as well as Easton painter, Nancy Tankersley.

For 18 years, Anne served as first mate on a sailing vessel, the gaff rigged topsail schooner, The Herandis. Her sketchbooks are filled with boats, harbors, skies and folks from these days. Anne admits, “Sailing is a great teacher. Drawing a boat from on a boat seems easier.”

Anne has given classes in plein air painting and drawing. She paints daily in her home studio in Trappe and welcomes visitors who can call 410-476-3393 for an appointment.

The library in St. Michaels is located at 106 Fremont Street. Hours are Monday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The library may be reached at 410-745-5877.
