Plein Air Easton Festival Highlights

July 12 - July 22

Celebrating its 14th year, Plein Air Easton continues to set the bar as the largest and most prestigious outdoor painting competition in the US. Hundreds of artists entered; only 58 were selected by this year’s juror, internationally-known and highly-respected arts professional, Dr. David C. Levy. Below are a few key components of Plein Air Easton you don’t want to miss.

St. Michaels

Kids’ Day Paint Out in Muskrat Park, St. Michaels

Tuesday, July 17 • 1 – 4 p.m.

St. Michaels Community Center will be hosting the Kids’ Day Paint Out in Muskrat Park.  Registration is open and free for kids ages 4 and up for the Paint Out which will take place from 1-3 p.m.  Prizes will be awarded at 4 p.m. Kids can also participate in other art projects in various mediums set up in stations around the park. This event is free and open to the public.  Pre-registration is requested to help with purchasing of supplies and can be made by contacting SMCC at 410-745-6073.  Registration can be made at the park the day of the event as well.  All kids that participate will receive a kiddie ice cream cone courtesy of Justine’s Ice Cream Parlour. Tilghman

6th ANNUAL TILGHMAN ISLAND PRE-COMPETITION PAINT OUT, EXHIBITION & SALE

Thursday, July 12 • 5 a.m. – 6 p.m. Tilghman Island Paint Out

Exhibition and Sale • 6 – 8 p.m.

WYLDER HOTEL, 21551 Chesapeake House Drive, Tilghman

Plein Air Easton competition painters will start with blank canvases as early as 5 a.m. to compete for a $1,000 Artists’ Choice Award. The artists can be seen throughout the day painting all over Tilghman Island. Completed paintings will be exhibited at Wylder Hotel beginning at 6 p.m. Dinner reservations required, 410-886-2121. The winning painting will be announced at 7 p.m. Sponsored by the Tilghman Watermen’s Museum.

PAINT OXFORD EXHIBIT & SALE – Free and Open to the Public

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to view the first official (and free) exhibit completed by PAE competition artists just that day in Oxford. The third annual Paint Oxford Day takes place on Sunday, July 15. Local businesses will offer specials and the day will conclude with more live music, a free reception, exhibit, and sale at the Oxford Community Center from 5 to 6:30 p.m. A $1,000 Artists’ Choice prize will be awarded. Presented by the Oxford Community Center in partnership with the Oxford Business Association.

AVALON THEATRE, 40 East Dover Street

In its second year of partnership with the Academy Art Museum, the Avalon Gallery and Information Center will showcase “Director’s Cut: Plein Air Selections from the Academy Art Museum’s Permanent Collection.” This is a unique opportunity to view rarely seen pieces that document and celebrate Plein Air Easton’s 14-year history throughout Talbot County.

The Avalon Information Center (Avalon lobby) is the place to go for comprehensive information about the festival and its associated events. Rise Up Coffee and Hill’s Café and Juice Bar will be set up in the theatre selling coffee drinks and luncheon fare. This is a great spot to take a break, chat with competition artists also taking a mid-day break, view the exhibit, refuel and plan your next course of action. NOCTURNE PAINT OUT – Free and Open to the Public

Wednesday, July 18 • 8:30 – 11 p.m.

Everyone paints! We’re taking it to the streets this evening for our second nocturne paint out under the stars. Bring your easels and paints and set up along Dover Street right in front of the Avalon Theatre for a relaxed and fun time painting among friends.

REHEARSE QUICK DRAW – Registration Required $30 per person

AVALON GALLERY & INFORMATION CENTER, 40 East Dover Street

Back by popular demand! This is an event specifically for anyone who wants to practice his or her quick draw skills prior to Saturday’s all-ages Quick Draw. Artists will register and check in at the Avalon Gallery and Information Center by 10 a.m. and then paint within the Quick Draw’s geographic boundaries between 10 a.m. – noon. At 12:30 p.m. the participating artists will gather in the Avalon Theatre for a structured critique and discussion of their works.

The Collectors’ Preview Party offers the first opportunity to see the entire competition show. This evening bustles with excitement and sales are brisk as a painting is sold every 45 seconds over 90 minutes.

The Competition Gallery will be held in the front two galleries at the acclaimed Academy Art Museum. Competition paintings will stay on the walls all weekend regardless of sales and the winning paintings will be featured collectively in the south gallery of the museum.

WATERFOWL ARMORY, 40 South Harrison Street

The Waterfowl Armory will hold the Library Show, the Awards Ceremony and the Judge’s Talk. This is an exhibit of the plein air works created exclusively by the 58 competition artists, most of which was completed just this week and may still be wet. All paintings will be fully on view and each artist will have a space to highlight an example of their work on a gallery-lit panel.

The Quick Draw Competition is a plein air painting competition, exhibit and sale that is open to anyone. This is one of the most compelling experiences of the week, as up to 200 artists are registered to paint for two hours within a specific geographic area downtown. At noon, all completed works are brought to Harrison Street where an exhibit and sale of paintings takes place. The paintings will be judged by Plein Air Easton Competition Judge, Jill Carver, and awards will be presented at 1:30 p.m. Unsold paintings will be removed at 2 p.m., so if you see something you like, don’t hesitate to buy it. Registration available online at pleinaireaston.com, in person at the Avalon Gallery and Info. Center the week prior, or the day of on Harrison Street.

The Working Artists Forum sponsors a juried and judged art exhibit entitled “Local Color.” This show spotlights some of the best artists from the Delmarva Peninsula. This year’s judge is Joe Gyurcsak, Grand Prize Winner, Plein Air Easton 2017. Sold paintings are replenished as necessary, so stop by often. Several artists will also take turns painting outside in the vicinity of the Tidewater Inn.

Artists 18 years old and younger are invited to paint out and have fun. Participants pay a $10 registration fee and “paint from life” between 10 a.m. and noon. Artists can bring their own supplies or may pay additional fees for supplies and framing. All artwork must be framed or matted (artwork created as part of the workshops is eligible as long as it is framed). Any framed and completed artwork should be displayed for judging and sale upon completion in front of the Bartlett Pear Inn on Harrison Street. Plein Air Easton Competition Judge Jill Carver will judge all submitted work beginning at noon with awards immediately following.
