Dorchester Center for the Arts will present “Teens: Seen and Heard – The Poet Laureate Poetry Workshop with Grace Cavalieri” on January 18, 1:00-3:00 p.m. Open to ages 13-18, the free workshop will involve talks, prompts, and writing on the spot. No previous writing experience required.

“We don’t hope to make poems as instant relics” states Cavalieri, “but rather access the ideas always available to us”. Teens can expect to learn methods to jump-start poems at home.

Those under 18 years of age will need to bring signed permission slips which will be furnished at registration so that group photos can be used by the Maryland State Arts Council.

After the workshop session 1:00-2:00 p.m., Grace will record each poet with at least a few of their new lines created, to make a podcast of the event.

Grace Cavalieri is an American poet, playwright and radio host of “The Poet and the Poem” from the Library of Congress. In 2019, she was appointed the 10th Poet Laureate of Maryland. Grace Cavalieri is the author of 21 books and chapbooks of poetry, and has had 26 plays produced on American stages. She founded two poetry presses in Washington DC that are still thriving. She is presently poetry columnist for The Washington Independent Review of Books. Her papers are in the George Washington University Gelman Library Special Collections.
