Washington College Academy of Lifelong Learning

October 18, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Washington College Academy of Lifelong Learning (WC-ALL) has announced its fall semester lineup of special events, open to members and non-members alike. An outstanding roster of speakers is scheduled for the monthly Learn at Lunch Series.

On October 18, Kristin Saunders will present “Bound to Keep a Promise: The Story Behind the Creation of the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center, State Park and National Historical Park.” Following that, on November 15, Sherwin Markman will speak on “Presidents and Our Constitution: Have They Always Honored Their Oath of Office?”

Learn at Lunches take place at noon in the Hynson Lounge of Hodson Hall on the Washington College campus, with a buffet luncheon followed by the presentation and a question and answer session.

WC-ALL also has two fall trips planned. On November 9, participants will have an opportunity to see the results of a 17-year effort to preserve the sights and landscapes associated with Harriet Tubman’s Eastern Shore during a trip to the new Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center. The guided trip will also include a short drive along the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, stops at the Bucktown Village Store and Harriet Tubman Museum and lunch at Old Salty’s. The trip will be a wonderful follow-up to the October 18 Learn at Lunch lecture.

A very special holiday excursion will take place on December 7 when WC-ALL sponsors a trip to the Hillwood Estate Museum and Gardens in Washington, D.C. Hillwood is the former home of cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post. The Russian collection housed there, including some 90 Faberge pieces, is considered the most comprehensive assemblage of 18th and 19th century Russian Imperial art outside of Russia. The estate will be in full holiday mode with elegant decorations.

WC-ALL is celebrating its 25th anniversary year in 2017-18. A membership organization that is open to the community, WC-ALL sponsors a broad range of fall and spring non-credit classes for adult learners. There are no academic requirements for membership and no papers or exams – just stimulating discussions and learning for the love of it.
