Garden Club Scholarship Awarded
Every spring, the Garden Club of the Eastern Shore (GCES) awards an annual merit-based scholarship to a graduating senior who attends school in Talbot County, or who is home schooled. The award is given to a senior who expects to major in horticulture, landscape architecture or design, botany, environmental science or a related field in college, community college, or a certified program. Over 29 scholarships have been awarded, totaling approximately $70,000 since the award was established in 1999. Previous recipients have become successful teachers, landscape architects, designers and environmental researchers around the country.
The scholarship committee is pleased to announce that this year’s winner of a $6,000 scholarship is Amanda Coleman from Easton High School. Amanda plans to major in Environmental Science, which she says has been a life-long passion. She has been admitted to Chesapeake Community College, with plans to complete a bachelor’s degree at Salisbury University.
Shelby Swann, English teacher at EHS comments, “Amanda is a hard- working student who strives to do her best.” She underwent a semester long internship at Pickering Creek Audubon Center and helped install a moon garden there. Amanda says she wants to help make the world a better place.
The GCES holds a major bi-annual fundraising event to raise money for its merit-based scholarships. This year’s event is the return of the exciting “She Shed” sale, which will be held on May 29, 30 and 31 in a historic home at 133 Washington Street in Easton, with plenty of parking in the old Safeway parking lot next door. Shoppers will find almost new furniture, tableware, knick-knacks, gardening supplies and much more.
