What Did the Pilgrims Eat?

What Did the Pilgrims Eat?

Katie Barney will talk about the food and herbs used by the passengers of the Mayflower at the Oct. 8 meeting of the Chesapeake Bay Herb Society.

Born in Baltimore, Barney is a member of the Mayflower Society for descendants of the original passengers.  She recently finished “Nantucket:  Coming Home,” with reminisces about spending her summers on the island.  Her ancestors were the first Proprietors (English settlers), who went into the whaling business and built most of the most beautiful homes and buildings on the island.

She is the author of numerous books.  Her hobbies include gourmet cooking, fine wines, history, sailing, genealogy, gardening, theology, and travel.  Her favorite topics for lectures are early American food and herbs, and edible flowers.

The society usually meets the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at Christ Church, 111 S. Harrison Street, Easton.  Meetings include an herbal potluck dinner, a short business meeting and a presentation on an herb-related topic.  The theme for the October meeting is herbs of South Carolina (bay leaves, cayenne, mint, and cilantro).

CBHS was formed in 2002 to share knowledge of herbs with the local community.  The group maintains the herb garden at Pickering Creek Audubon Center.

For more information, call 301-452-2813 or visit the society’s Facebook page.
