Spiralis Gallery: What the Water Remembers

Spiralis Gallery

Notes from the water’s edge, Easton, Maryland

Ask Gail Patterson, owner of Spiralis Gallery in Easton, what she thinks about when she looks out at the Chesapeake, and she doesn’t talk about scenery. She talks about story.

“The Chesapeake carries culture and memory long after a moment has passed. It’s a connector,” she says. “And I think that resonates deeply with the art we showcase at Spiralis, and our passion for exploring narratives people might otherwise miss.”

Patterson founded Spiralis on Dover Street with a clear intention: a gallery built around story, not decoration. “The art that I collect is art that speaks to me,” she says, “Work with meaning underneath it. Something that asks the viewer to slow down, stay a while, and connect.” It’s that idea that Patterson’s applied now to the shorelines that she lives alongside, and that sits at the center of Tides of Memory, the gallery’s new exhibition opening this September.

The Exhibition: Tides of Memory

Tides of Memory is an exploration of water, ecology, and cultural memory grounded in Maryland’s Eastern and Western Shores. The exhibition treats land and water as living archives, sites where environmental systems, migration, labor, Indigenous knowledge, and diasporic histories all intersect.

The Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries have long shaped generations of families: Indigenous communities, African Americans, immigrants, watermen, and farmers whose stories remain embedded in the region’s land and waterways. These waters have carried commerce and opportunity, but also displacement, enslavement, environmental change, and resilience.

At the heart of the show is diasporic memory itself: the ways histories travel across generations, oceans, and communities through storytelling, ritual, craft, foodways, music, language, and embodied cultural practice. Memory, here, is not a fixed archive but a living process, continually reshaped through migration, return, adaptation, and care. The exhibition features the work of Dane Tilghman, whose richly textured palette-knife paintings tell stories without words.

“My art is a calibration of lives past for their contribution to the human experience. Although many of the people I paint are not famous or well known, deep in our soul we are connected to them,” Tilghman says. He often points to a line from Bill Withers to describe it: “The wisdom of the future is the past. In city brogues and wise old southern drawls. The words that say the most say things that last.”

Tilghman paints flowers, gathering places, and the quiet human moments of everyday life. Black subjects rendered in thick impasto, vibrant color, and unmistakable presence. In Tides of Memory, his work sits within a larger context of shoreline, migration, and inherited memory, extending that same attention and honor to community and place.

The show also foregrounds the ecological realities of Maryland’s shores. Rising seas, changing coastlines, and evolving communities prompt urgent questions about what is remembered, what I lost, and what responsibilities we carry toward both cultural and environmental stewardship.

Worth the Trip

Tides of Memory doesn’t ask visitors to arrive with answers. It asks them to sit with what the water and the land already carry, and to leave with a little more of that memory than they came in with.
