This September, The Zebra Gallery will present Animals in Our Lives, Animals in Our Art, an exhibition celebrating the enduring presence of animals in our imaginations, environments, and creative expression. Showcasing new works by an exceptional lineup of internationally and locally acclaimed artists—including Fiona Smith, Joy Tappen, Caesar Segun, and David Rhue—the exhibition explores the many ways animals enrich our lives and inspire artistic storytelling.

Featured are seven new original paintings by Sydney-based artist Fiona Smith. Her captivating works blend birds, interiors, design, pattern, antiques, and Australian wildlife into imaginative compositions that seamlessly merge realism with surrealism.

Bainbridge Island–based artist Joy Tappen transforms naturally shed feathers into intricate, hand-carved depictions of the avian world. Her work offers a window into the lives of birds, honoring their complexity and the delicate structures that give them both beauty and flight. Using surgical tools, Tappen carves paper-backed, ethically sourced feathers, which are then mounted on entomology pins within shadow boxes to emphasize their dimensionality and evoke a sense of movement. The resulting works are both mesmerizing and deeply enchanting.

Sanibel artist David Rhue continues his beloved series of whimsical paintings depicting wildlife that has taken over family homes while their owners are away on vacation. Filled with humor and lively detail, his latest works offer zany observations of animals joyfully inhabiting human spaces.

Canadian-Nigerian artist Caesar Segun continues his exploration of ancestral connections through richly symbolic paintings featuring koi fish. Representing ancestors and spirit guides, the koi serve as powerful metaphors for the unseen forces that shape our daily lives, inviting viewers to reflect on heritage, spirituality, and personal journeys.

The exhibition opens with a reception on Friday, September 4, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Guests are invited to meet the artists, enjoy refreshments, and celebrate the opening of Animals in Our Lives, Animals in Our Art. Those unable to attend the reception are welcome to visit the exhibition anytime during its run.

The Zebra Gallery is open Thursday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with additional hours available by chance or by appointment.
